Favourite artists of Magic: the Gathering, part four: Steve Argyle.
Okay, I cheated and did pick four pieces of art this time around. It’s just - impossible to not do so, yeah? I mean, look at it. Look at the art. Now tell me you could’ve picked any one of those to be left out, because I can’t.
The absolute favourite artist of many a player, Steve Argyle is the master of incredibly detailed, beautiful art. We have all seen the ridiculously detailed alternative version of Liliana of the Veil, and it leaves you in a stunned stupor, wondering how the hell he ever managed it without going crazy. Or perhaps he already is crazy. Who knows! I, for one, bow humbly before Steve Argyle’s ability to art.
With Argyle’s work, the devil (or in this case, God) is in the detail. There’s no base concept such as a ‘background’ - every piece of the art is equally as important to the overall feel of the piece. I’m trying to think of something useful to say here, but if there’s one thing his art always succeeds in, it’s leaving me incapable of coherent thoughts and speech. There’s just too much to say to know where to start.
So you’ll have to do without my usual banter about how Guul Draz Vampire is one spider even I wouldn’t want to find in my bedroom (or do I? Hmm), or that I can totally imagine Somberwald Sage strangling someone with that braid of hers, and just enjoy the magnificence.
Note that I picked the alternative version of Snuff Out - I personally like the feel of that better than the actual card art.
I really like the first one.

I find myself wondering about humanity. Their attitude to my sister’s gift is so strange. Why do they fear the sunless lands? It is as natural to die as it is to be born. But they fear her. Dread her. Feebly they attempt to placate her. They do not love her.
We’re sure as hell weird. We’re terrified of the cutest, kindest girl we could ever meet before we die, but we love and pray to the gloomy, vengeful, moody guy WHO WATCHES YOU SLEEP, ALWAYS.
